Bríd isn’t just a book design; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of a woman named Bríd, told through a fusion of poetry, paintings, and memories. The collaboration between poet Micheal O’Siadhail and artist Mick O’Dea aimed to capture the essence of Bríd’s journey—her loves, struggles with chronic illness, and her sudden passing.
The book is a deeply personal and shared experience of love, death, friendship, and meaning. The challenge was to create a narrative that ebbed and flowed, expanding and contracting through the intertwining of Micheal’s poignant poetry and Mick’s evocative paintings.
Using a carefully curated selection of poems from Micheal’s “One Crimson Thread” series and original paintings by Mick, “Bríd” takes readers on an emotional journey. The design process was just as meticulous, with the color scheme evolving from dark, grieving tones to enlightened yellows and ochres—Bríd’s favorite colors. To enhance the reading experience, the book features an open binding, allowing spreads to be opened flat seamlessly. Additionally, a smaller poetry booklet accompanies the main book, providing readers with a deeper immersion into Bríd’s world.
Recognized for its outstanding book design, “Bríd” won the Institute of Designers in Ireland 2022 award for Printed Book Design. This collaborative effort between Micheal O’Siadhail, Mick O’Dea, and Red&Grey Design, led by Bob Grey, resulted in a beautiful and moving portrayal of Bríd’s life and legacy, destined to touch the hearts of readers for years to come.
